Executive Summary

The Recordbrowser WordPress plugin through version 1.1.7 has an unauthenticated SQL injection vulnerability. It fails to properly sanitize and escape the 'recordid' parameter before using it in a SQL query. This allows attackers to inject malicious SQL code, enabling them to execute additional queries and extract sensitive database information without needing authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Recordbrowser WordPress plugin version 1.1.7 or below is installed. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin directory for version details. Monitor network traffic for unusual SQL query patterns or unauthorized database access attempts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to access sensitive data stored in the WordPress database. They could extract user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data. Since no authentication is required, any website using the vulnerable plugin version is at risk of data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal and sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, and a breach could result in fines. HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information, and unauthorized access violates these requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Recordbrowser plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a patch is released. Implement web application firewalls to filter malicious SQL injection attempts and restrict database access permissions.
