Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated SQL injection flaw in the WP Verify API WordPress plugin version 1.0.0 or below. It occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape the 'verify' parameter before using it in SQL queries. This allows attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the WP Verify API plugin version 1.0.0 or below is installed on your WordPress site. Inspect the plugin's files for improper sanitization of the 'verify' parameter in SQL queries. Look for unauthenticated requests attempting SQL injection patterns in the 'verify' parameter.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access, modify, or delete sensitive data in the WordPress database, such as user credentials, posts, or other confidential information. This could lead to complete site compromise, data breaches, or unauthorized administrative access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately remove or disable the WP Verify API plugin if installed. Since no known fix is available, uninstalling the plugin is the only mitigation until an update is released. Monitor for suspicious database queries or unauthorized access attempts.
