Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an insufficient input validation issue in the time server (NTP) setting of certain NETGEAR router models. An attacker with local network access and administrator credentials can exploit it to run unauthorized commands on the router, potentially compromising its integrity.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your router models (CBR40, R7000, R7000P, RAX40) are running vulnerable NTP settings. Log in to the router admin panel and inspect the time server configuration for unauthorized commands. Use network scanning tools like nmap to verify open ports and services on these models.

Impact Analysis

If you own one of the affected NETGEAR models, an attacker could gain control over your router's settings, alter its configuration, or execute malicious commands. This could lead to network disruptions or unauthorized access to your local network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthorized command execution on the router by an attacker with local network access and admin credentials, potentially compromising router integrity. Such unauthorized access could violate compliance requirements that mandate strict control over network devices and data integrity, such as sections of GDPR or HIPAA that require secure configurations and protection against unauthorized modifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware of affected NETGEAR models (CBR40, R7000, R7000P, RAX40) to the latest version provided by NETGEAR. Ensure the router's administrator credentials are strong and not shared. Disable remote administration if not required and monitor network traffic for unusual activity.
