Description

SparkyFitness is a self-hosted, AI-powered health and fitness tracker for families. Prior to 1.6.0, the api/admin/backup/restore endpoint interpolates an uploaded filename into a shell command. An authenticated global administrator uploads a restore archive with a crafted filename. The administrator can supply a restore archive with a filename containing shell metacharacters. Successful exploitation can execute arbitrary operating-system commands with the server process privileges. This issue is fixed in version 1.6.0.

Executive Summary

SparkyFitness before version 1.6.0 has a vulnerability in the api/admin/backup/restore endpoint where an authenticated global administrator can upload a restore archive with a crafted filename containing shell metacharacters. This filename is interpolated into a shell command, allowing arbitrary OS command execution with the server process privileges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your SparkyFitness instance is running a version prior to 1.6.0. Verify the presence of the vulnerable api/admin/backup/restore endpoint by inspecting network traffic or server logs for backup/restore operations involving user-uploaded filenames.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with global administrator access could execute arbitrary commands on the server, potentially leading to data theft, system compromise, or disruption of the SparkyFitness service. This requires an authenticated administrator account.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exfiltration of sensitive health data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face compliance violations and penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade SparkyFitness to version 1.6.0 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict access to the api/admin/backup/restore endpoint to trusted administrators only and monitor for unusual command execution patterns in server logs.
