Description

Operating system command injection vulnerability in the SVN integration component of BugTracker.NET. The application incorporates the value of the field corresponding to the repository into an svn.exe command without properly validating it. An authenticated user with administrator privileges could store manipulated arguments in the database and subsequently cause them to be processed by the revision comparison functionality. A successful exploit could allow the execution of arbitrary commands with the privileges of the account used by the application. To exploit this vulnerability, svn.exe must be installed and capable of being invoked by the service.

Executive Summary

This is an operating system command injection vulnerability in BugTracker.NET's SVN integration component. An authenticated administrator can store manipulated arguments in the database that get processed by the revision comparison functionality. If svn.exe is installed and accessible, this could allow arbitrary command execution with the application's privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of svn.exe on the system and verify if BugTracker.NET is configured to use it. Inspect database entries for manipulated arguments in the SVN integration fields. Monitor command execution logs for unexpected svn.exe invocations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with administrator access could execute arbitrary commands on the system running BugTracker.NET. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or further network infiltration depending on the application's privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations and penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the SVN integration component in BugTracker.NET if not required. Restrict database write access to administrators only. Implement input validation for all fields used in SVN commands. Ensure svn.exe is not accessible by the application account.
