SQL Injection in Vitepos POS for WooCommerce Plugin

Description

The Vitepos – Point of Sale (POS) for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'src_by' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.5.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers, or authenticated attackers holding any POS role (such as vtpos-cashier), to exploit the vulnerability, as the /vitepos/v1/vendor/list REST route's permission callback requires only a POS role assignment rather than any elevated WordPress capability.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The Vitepos – Point of Sale (POS) for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress has a SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 3.5.1. The 'src_by' parameter is not properly escaped, allowing attackers to inject malicious SQL queries. This can be exploited by unauthenticated users or authenticated users with any POS role to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Vitepos plugin up to version 3.5.1. Check for unusual SQL queries or database access patterns, particularly via the 'src_by' parameter in the /vitepos/v1/vendor/list REST route. Review server logs for suspicious activity targeting this endpoint.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to access sensitive data stored in the database, such as customer information, payment details, or other confidential records. If exploited, it could lead to data breaches, financial loss, or unauthorized access to critical systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other data protection regulations due to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if such a breach occurs.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Vitepos plugin to the latest version beyond 3.5.1. If an update is unavailable, disable or remove the plugin. Implement strict input validation for all user-supplied parameters. Restrict access to the /vitepos/v1/vendor/list endpoint via firewall rules or WordPress capability checks.
