XML External Entity Processing Flaw in JAXB

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-92877, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-12

Last updated on: 2026-10-12

Assigner: Eclipse Foundation

Description

The JAXB factory methods historically relied solely on `FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING` to prevent XML External Entity (XXE) resolution. On JAXP implementations where that feature alone does not block external entity resolution, an attacker who can get untrusted XML unmarshalled through JAXB can read local files via out-of-band XXE.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves XML External Entity (XXE) resolution in the Eclipse Implementation of JAXB (jaxb-ri). The JAXB factory methods relied only on FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING to block XXE, but on some JAXP implementations this was insufficient. Attackers could exploit this to read local files via out-of-band XXE if they could get untrusted XML processed by JAXB.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect applications using JAXB for XML parsing configurations. Check if FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING is enabled and verify if external entity processing is disabled. Commands like grep -r "FEATURE_SECURE_PROCESSING" /path/to/code or checking XML factory configurations for disabled external entities can help.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected versions of Eclipse JAXB RI (4.0.4 or 4.0.9), an attacker who submits malicious XML could read sensitive files on your system. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to confidential information, or further system compromise depending on the environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate protection of sensitive data (e.g., GDPR for personal data, HIPAA for health information). Unauthorized file access via XXE may result in data exposure, leading to regulatory penalties, loss of trust, and potential legal consequences for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update JAXB RI to a patched version (post-4.0.9) where external entity processing is disabled by default. Ensure XML factories explicitly set DISALLOW_DOCTYPE_DECL=true and disable EXTERNAL_GE, EXTERNAL_PE, and LOAD_EXTERNAL_DTD. Review and harden XML parsing configurations in all applications using JAXB.
