Executive Summary

This vulnerability in GitLab CE/EE allows an authenticated user to execute arbitrary JavaScript in other users' browser sessions by exploiting improperly sanitized HTML attributes in syntax-highlighted output from a specially crafted repository.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves improper HTML sanitization in GitLab's syntax-highlighted output, allowing JavaScript execution in other users' sessions. To detect it, check GitLab versions for affected releases (19.1.x before 19.2.8, 19.3.x before 19.3.5, or 19.4.x before 19.4.2). Use commands like 'gitlab-rake gitlab:env:info' to verify version or inspect logs for suspicious repository activities.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive data, perform actions on behalf of other users, or take control of user sessions if they trick a user into viewing the malicious repository.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade GitLab to a patched version: 19.2.8, 19.3.5, or 19.4.2 or later. Remove access for any potentially affected users until the update is applied.
