Description

The User Registration & Membership – Free & Paid Memberships, Subscriptions, Content Restriction, User Profile, Custom User Registration & Login Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.8 This is due to missing or incorrect nonce validation on the trigger_bulk_action function. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to force administrators to approve pending user registrations or deny arbitrary user accounts, locking targeted users out of the site via a forged request granted they can trick a site administrator into performing an action such as clicking on a link. An attacker can bypass the earlier nonce check in trigger_query_actions() by supplying an empty new_role parameter, which causes that handler to return early and cede control to the unprotected trigger_bulk_action() handler; the exit() call at the end of that handler additionally prevents WordPress core's own bulk-users nonce validation from executing.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) flaw in the User Registration & Membership WordPress plugin up to version 5.2.8. It allows unauthenticated attackers to trick administrators into approving or denying user registrations via forged requests. The issue stems from missing nonce validation in the trigger_bulk_action function.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) in the User Registration & Membership plugin for WordPress. Detection requires checking if the plugin version is 5.2.8 or lower. Use WordPress admin dashboard or run commands like 'wp plugin list' in WP-CLI to verify the installed version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could force an admin to approve malicious user registrations or lock legitimate users out by denying their accounts. This requires tricking the admin into clicking a link, but could lead to unauthorized access or disruption of site functionality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to manipulate user roles and approvals via Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF). For GDPR, this could lead to unauthorized access to personal data if attackers approve malicious user registrations. For HIPAA, improper user management may violate access controls over protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the User Registration & Membership plugin to the latest version beyond 5.2.8. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily or removing it until a patch is released. Review user accounts for unauthorized changes and monitor for suspicious administrator actions.
