Jinja2 Template Injection in Ansible Operator Plugins

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-92982, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

A flaw was found in Ansible Operator Plugins. A low-privileged Kubernetes user can exploit a Jinja2 template injection vulnerability by crafting malicious custom resource (CR) specification values. These values are processed by Ansible without proper sanitization, allowing embedded Jinja2 expressions to be executed within the operator pod. This can lead to arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation, granting the attacker control over the operator's service account with cluster-wide permissions.

Executive Summary

This is a Jinja2 template injection flaw in Ansible Operator Plugins. A low-privileged Kubernetes user can craft malicious custom resource (CR) specifications containing Jinja2 expressions. When processed by Ansible without sanitization, these expressions execute within the operator pod, enabling arbitrary code execution and privilege escalation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control of the operator's service account, which has cluster-wide permissions. This could allow unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of cluster resources, or disruption of services running on the Kubernetes cluster.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Ansible Operator Plugins to the latest patched version immediately. Review custom resource specifications for suspicious Jinja2 expressions. Restrict low-privileged Kubernetes user permissions to minimize attack surface. Monitor operator pod logs for unexpected code execution patterns.
