Executive Summary

This vulnerability occurs when the BuildKit daemon is started with the --cdi-disabled flag, causing a panic if builds attempt to use CDI devices. It can happen accidentally or maliciously and affects versions up to v0.33.0.

Detection Guidance

Check if BuildKit daemon is running with --cdi-disabled flag by inspecting startup logs or configuration files. Look for daemon panics or crashes during builds involving CDI devices.

Impact Analysis

The primary impact is system availability due to daemon panics. It requires network access, low attack complexity, and no specific privileges or user interaction. Required CDI devices produce errors, while optional ones are ignored.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability by causing daemon panics, which could lead to service disruptions. It does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity of data, which are key concerns for GDPR and HIPAA. However, prolonged downtime could indirectly impact compliance by failing to maintain availability of systems processing personal or health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade BuildKit to version v0.32.3 or later. Remove or avoid using the --cdi-disabled flag during daemon startup. Ensure CDI entitlements are properly configured if required.
