Description

The Tutor LMS – eLearning and online course solution plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via display_name Parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.1.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that a Legal Consent record exists for the attacker's user account, causing the View Logs button to appear in the wp-admin/users.php Consent Logs column.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) issue in the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the display_name parameter. The flaw exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 4.1.0.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking for the presence of the Tutor LMS plugin versions up to 4.1.0 and verifying if Legal Consent records exist for user accounts. Inspect WordPress plugin files and database entries for the display_name parameter sanitization issues.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. The attack requires a Legal Consent record for the attacker's account to trigger the exploit via the View Logs button in wp-admin/users.php.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Tutor LMS plugin to the latest version beyond 4.1.0 to patch the vulnerability.
  • Review and remove any unauthorized Legal Consent records in the WordPress database.
  • Monitor user accounts with subscriber-level access or higher for suspicious activity.
