Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Apache Impala up to version 4.5.2. A user with only SELECT permission can inject JavaScript into a table alias. When another user views the query plan in Impala's Web UI, the injected script executes in their browser.

Detection Guidance

Check Impala version with: impala-shell --version. If it is 4.5.2 or earlier, the system is vulnerable. Inspect table aliases in queries for JavaScript content via logs or UI.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the user, or redirect them to malicious sites. Users viewing query plans in Impala's Web UI are at risk if an attacker has previously exploited this flaw.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Impala to version 4.5.3 or later immediately. Restrict SELECT permissions to trusted users only. Monitor query plans in the Web UI for suspicious aliases.
