Directory Traversal in Tainacan WordPress Plugin

Description

The Tainacan plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Directory Traversal in all versions up to, and including, 1.3.0 via the 'guid' parameter parameter. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to read the contents of arbitrary files on the server, which can contain sensitive information. This vulnerability is exploitable only when the uploads/tainacan directory does not exist on the server, as this condition causes realpath() to return false, collapsing the base path to an empty string and rendering the containment check ineffective.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Directory Traversal issue in the Tainacan WordPress plugin versions up to 1.3.0. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to read arbitrary files on the server by exploiting the 'guid' parameter. The flaw occurs when the uploads/tainacan directory is missing, causing a path collapse that bypasses file containment checks.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Tainacan plugin version up to 1.3.0 in WordPress. Inspect server access logs for unusual file access patterns, especially targeting the 'guid' parameter. Verify if the uploads/tainacan directory exists on the server.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to access sensitive files on your server, including configuration files, user data, or other confidential information. This may lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further compromise of your WordPress site or hosting environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if sensitive personal or health data is exposed. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Tainacan plugin to the latest version beyond 1.3.0. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Ensure the uploads/tainacan directory exists on the server to prevent path traversal. Restrict subscriber-level access to sensitive areas.
