Executive Summary

IBM i versions 7.3 to 7.6 are vulnerable to a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack due to improper input validation in the HTTP Server Administration GUI. A remote authenticated attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary script code.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the presence of IBM i versions 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, or 7.6 and verifying if the HTTP Server Administration GUI is exposed. Inspect system logs for unusual script execution or unauthorized access attempts. Use commands like 'system -v' to check IBM i version and 'WRKHTTPCFG' to review HTTP server configurations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into the GUI, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting users to malicious sites, or performing actions on behalf of users. This could lead to unauthorized access or data theft.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided PTFs immediately: SJ11641 for version 7.3, SJ11643 for 7.4, SJ11644 for 7.5, and SJ11645 for 7.6. If using an unsupported version, upgrade to a supported release. Disable the HTTP Server Administration GUI if not required to reduce attack surface.
