Executive Summary

The Aurora Heatmap WordPress plugin up to version 1.7.2 has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'url' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. These scripts execute when an admin views the affected page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugins for Aurora Heatmap versions up to 1.7.2. Inspect network traffic for suspicious scripts injected via the 'url' parameter. Review admin page links for unexpected heatmap links containing scripts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal admin session cookies, perform actions as the admin, or deface the website. Since it requires admin interaction to trigger, it poses a risk to site integrity and user trust if exploited.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face fines or penalties if exploited due to inadequate protection of user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Aurora Heatmap plugin to the latest version beyond 1.7.2. Remove the plugin if no update is available. Scan WordPress sites for injected scripts in pages or posts.
