Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the SMS Alert WordPress plugin before version 4.0.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass authentication by exploiting a flaw in the One-Time Password (OTP) login feature. The plugin fails to verify if the account being logged in matches the phone number associated with the OTP code, enabling attackers to sign in as any user, including administrators, by using a phone they control.

Detection Guidance

Check if the SMS Alert WordPress plugin version 4.0.0 is installed and the OTP login feature is enabled. Look for unauthorized login attempts or sessions from unexpected locations.

Impact Analysis

If you use the SMS Alert plugin version 4.0.0 or earlier with the OTP login feature enabled, attackers could gain unauthorized access to your WordPress account, including admin accounts. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized changes, or complete site compromise. Exploitation requires the OTP feature to be active, which is not the default setting.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. GDPR mandates strict data protection and user access controls, while HIPAA requires safeguards for protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SMS Alert plugin to version 4.0.1 or later immediately. Disable the OTP login feature if not required. Monitor user accounts for suspicious activity.
