Description

An OS command injection vulnerability exists in the PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) session cleanup routines during SSH session termination on Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. An authenticated user authenticating via an external directory or AAA service whose username or profile identifier contains shell metacharacters can trigger arbitrary command execution with root privileges when their remote SSH session closes.

Executive Summary

This is an OS command injection vulnerability in Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. It occurs during SSH session termination in PAM session cleanup routines. An authenticated user with a username or profile identifier containing shell metacharacters can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges when their SSH session closes.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking Brocade Fabric OS versions for affected releases (before 9.2.2d or 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1). Inspect SSH session logs for users with external directory or AAA authentication containing shell metacharacters in usernames or profile identifiers.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to an external directory or AAA service could exploit this to gain root-level control over the system. This could lead to unauthorized data access, system manipulation, or denial of service. The impact depends on the system's role in the network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating compliance requirements for GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations. It may result in legal penalties, loss of certification, or reputational damage due to compromised data integrity or confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Brocade Fabric OS to version 9.2.2d or later. If using version 10.0.0, apply patch 10.0.0a1 or higher. Review and sanitize usernames or profile identifiers in external directory or AAA services to remove shell metacharacters.
