Assigner: Brocade Communications Systems, LLC

Description

An OS command injection vulnerability exists in the REST API management interface of Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1 allows an authenticated, high-privileged remote attacker to execute arbitrary system commands with root permissions. An attacker with administrative privileges to configure SSH known host settings can supply specially crafted parameter values containing shell metacharacters to trigger command execution on the host system.

Executive Summary

This is an OS command injection vulnerability in Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. An authenticated attacker with high privileges can exploit it by sending specially crafted parameter values containing shell metacharacters via the REST API management interface. This allows them to execute arbitrary system commands with root permissions.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires checking Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. Verify the OS version using commands like 'version' or 'show version' in the management interface. Inspect REST API logs for suspicious SSH known host configuration changes or unusual command execution patterns.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the affected system, allowing them to install malware, steal data, disrupt operations, or pivot to other systems. Since the commands run with root permissions, the impact is severe and could lead to complete system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of compliance certifications if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Brocade Fabric OS to version 9.2.2d or later, or 10.0.0a2 or later. Remove administrative access for unnecessary users. Monitor and restrict SSH known host configuration changes. Apply network segmentation to limit access to the REST API management interface.
