Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow in the libming library version 0.4.8 or earlier. It occurs in the r_readc() function within src/blocks/fromswf.c. The issue is triggered by a crafted SWF file with a malformed or truncated RECT header, which can cause a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect SWF files processed by libming versions 0.4.8 or earlier for malformed RECT headers. Use tools like ASan (AddressSanitizer) to detect heap buffer overflows during SWF parsing. Check for crashes or memory corruption when processing SWF files with large nbits values or truncated headers.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to crash the application processing the malicious SWF file, leading to a denial of service. This could disrupt services relying on libming for SWF file processing.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial-of-service or heap corruption in software using libming, which may indirectly impact compliance by disrupting data processing or availability. However, the provided CVE data does not specify direct effects on GDPR or HIPAA compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Update libming to the latest version (0.4.8 or later) to address the heap buffer overflow in r_readc(). Avoid processing untrusted or malformed SWF files until patched.
