Executive Summary

The Payments for Hubtel WordPress plugin before version 1.0.2 stores payment requests in a debug log that is publicly accessible. This log contains sensitive payment gateway API credentials in plain text, allowing unauthenticated attackers to steal these credentials.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Payments for Hubtel plugin version is below 1.0.2. Look for a publicly accessible debug log file, typically named debug.log or similar, in the plugin's directory or WordPress's wp-content folder. Use commands like 'curl -s http://[your-site]/wp-content/plugins/payments-for-hubtel/debug.log' to access the log and verify if it contains plain text API credentials.

Additionally, inspect server access logs for unusual requests to the debug log file or plugin directories. Tools like 'grep' can help search for exposed credentials in logs.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can use the exposed API credentials to make unauthorized transactions or access sensitive payment data. This could lead to financial losses, fraud, or compromise of customer payment information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for data protection and payment security, such as PCI DSS, GDPR, and HIPAA, due to unauthorized access to sensitive payment credentials and potential exposure of personal data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Payments for Hubtel plugin to version 1.0.2 or later to patch the vulnerability.

If updating is not possible, restrict public access to the debug log file by modifying server permissions or using .htaccess rules to block external access.

Rotate all exposed API credentials immediately to prevent unauthorized access. Monitor for any suspicious activity related to the compromised credentials.
