Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the Optimole WordPress plugin versions 4.0.0 to 4.2.14. It allows any authenticated user, including those with Subscriber-level access, to view sensitive data such as third-party service credentials due to a missing capability check in a dashboard widget.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Optimole plugin in your WordPress admin dashboard under Plugins. If the version is between 4.0.0 and 4.2.14, the system is vulnerable. Log in as a Subscriber-level user and navigate to the dashboard widget to see if sensitive data like third-party service credentials is exposed.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with even minimal access (like a Subscriber) could steal third-party service credentials, potentially leading to unauthorized access to external services, data breaches, or further exploitation of connected systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information, potentially resulting in legal penalties or compliance violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Optimole plugin to version 4.2.15 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider temporarily disabling the plugin until an update is applied. Review user roles and permissions to ensure only necessary users have access to sensitive areas.
