Description

The Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'saswp_review_text' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.67 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The nonce that serves as the only authorization gate is publicly printed in the [saswp-reviews-form] shortcode HTML, making it obtainable by any anonymous visitor and rendering it ineffective as an access control boundary.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'saswp_review_text' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised page.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP plugin versions up to and including 1.67. Inspect WordPress sites for the 'saswp_review_text' parameter in pages or posts. Look for unusual scripts in page source or database entries related to reviews.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Since the vulnerability is stored, it affects all visitors to the infected page without requiring further interaction.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling or removing the plugin. Implement input validation and output escaping for the 'saswp_review_text' parameter. Monitor for unauthorized script injections in web pages.
