Description

The User Registration & Membership – Free & Paid Memberships, Subscriptions, Content Restriction, User Profile, Custom User Registration & Login Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Checkbox Field Value in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The nopriv AJAX action user_registration_user_form_submit reaches ur_process_registration() without nonce validation, meaning any unauthenticated request can reach the vulnerable code path.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in a WordPress plugin called User Registration & Membership. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via checkbox field values due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The vulnerability exists in versions up to 5.2.8.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the User Registration & Membership plugin version 5.2.8 or lower. Look for unauthorized script injections in checkbox field values. Inspect AJAX requests to user_registration_user_form_submit without nonce validation.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that execute when users access infected pages. This could lead to theft of user sessions, defacement of websites, or redirection to malicious sites. The lack of nonce validation in the user_registration_user_form_submit AJAX action enables this attack.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if user profiles are affected. Both standards require protection against unauthorized data access and script injection.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Registration & Membership plugin to the latest version. Disable unauthenticated access to user_registration_user_form_submit. Implement input sanitization for checkbox fields. Add nonce validation to AJAX actions.
