Description

The Presto Player plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content via <presto-player> Tag in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires an initial comment approval, though WordPress default settings will auto-approve all subsequent comments from the same author, allowing a patient unauthenticated attacker to land the payload without further admin intervention.

Executive Summary

The Presto Player plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It allows attackers to inject malicious scripts via comment content using a presto-player tag. The plugin fails to properly sanitize input and escape output, enabling arbitrary web scripts to execute when users view infected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Presto Player plugin versions up to and including 4.5.1 in your WordPress installation. Look for unauthorized script injections in comment content or pages using the <presto-player> tag.

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that run when users access compromised pages. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. Attackers may also deface websites or redirect users to malicious sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations may face fines or legal consequences if exploited, as it compromises user privacy and security.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Presto Player plugin to the latest version beyond 4.5.1. Review and remove any suspicious comments or scripts. Consider disabling comments temporarily if updates are not immediately available.
