Stored XSS in SureDash WordPress Plugin

Description

The SureDash – Community, Courses & Member Dashboard plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'display_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.12.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit is triggered when any user hovers over a comment's like counter on a community page, as the plugin's tooltip handler assigns the attacker-controlled data-tooltip-description attribute value directly to innerHTML, re-parsing the browser-decoded entity payload as live HTML.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the SureDash WordPress plugin. It allows attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'display_name' parameter. The injected scripts execute when users hover over comment like counters due to improper input sanitization and output escaping.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the SureDash plugin version 1.12.0 or lower. Inspect pages for malicious scripts in the 'display_name' parameter or tooltip handlers. Look for unexpected HTML in comment like counters.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. It may also deface websites or spread malware. Users with minimal access (subscribers) can exploit this to compromise higher-privilege accounts or site visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information (PHI) if exploited, risking compliance with security rules.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SureDash plugin to the latest version. Remove unauthorized user accounts with subscriber-level access or higher. Monitor pages for injected scripts and sanitize user input fields.
