Description

The String locator WordPress plugin before 2.6.8 does not restrict the classes allowed when deserializing the content of a database row saved through its database editor, allowing unauthenticated attackers to store a serialized PHP object that is instantiated when an administrator later opens and saves that row. If a suitable POP chain is present via another installed String locator WordPress plugin before 2.6.8 or , this can lead to arbitrary file deletion, sensitive data disclosure or remote code execution.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated PHP Object Injection flaw in the WordPress plugin String Locator versions before 2.6.8. It occurs because the plugin does not restrict classes allowed during deserialization of database row content. Attackers can store a serialized PHP object in a database row, which gets instantiated when an administrator later opens and saves that row.

Detection Guidance

Check if the String Locator WordPress plugin version is below 2.6.8 by inspecting the plugin files or WordPress admin panel. Look for unauthorized database entries or suspicious serialized PHP objects in the plugin's database editor.

Impact Analysis

If a suitable POP chain exists through another installed plugin or theme, this vulnerability could lead to arbitrary file deletion, sensitive data disclosure, or remote code execution. An administrator's interaction with a crafted database row triggers the exploitation.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the String Locator plugin to version 2.6.8 or later immediately. Review database entries for unauthorized changes and remove any suspicious serialized PHP objects. Ensure no other plugins or themes with POP chains are installed.
