Executive Summary

The User Private Files WordPress plugin before version 2.2.0 has a flaw in multisite installations where its rewrite rule for routing file requests through access checks is bypassed. This allows unauthenticated users to directly retrieve other users' private files without proper authorization.

Detection Guidance

Check if the User Private Files plugin version is below 2.2.0. Use WordPress admin panel or run a command like 'wp plugin list' if using WP-CLI to verify the installed version.

Impact Analysis

If you use the User Private Files plugin in a WordPress multisite setup with a version before 2.2.0, attackers could access sensitive private files of other users without authentication. This could lead to data breaches, privacy violations, or unauthorized exposure of confidential information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing private user data without authorization. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Private Files plugin to version 2.2.0 or later immediately to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until an update is applied.
