Description

The Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via Comment Content via yotu-wp Cookie-Blocker Filter in all versions up to, and including, 7.5.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit bypasses WordPress's wp_kses comment sanitization because the payload uses only allow-listed tags and hides executable tokens inside quoted attribute values as plain text; the XSS is only realized when Complianz's own output-buffer filter performs str_replace() rewrites that break out of the attribute context, and requires the comment to be approved before it executes for visitors.

Executive Summary

The Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner WordPress plugin up to version 7.5.5 has a stored XSS flaw. Attackers can inject malicious scripts via comment content using allowed tags and quoted attributes. The payload executes when Complianz's output filter processes comments, breaking out of attribute context. No authentication is needed.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress comments for unusual scripts or payloads in the content. Check for approved comments containing obfuscated or unexpected attributes. Use WordPress admin panel to review comments or query the database directly for suspicious entries.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts into pages viewed by users. This could lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. Users accessing infected pages may have their data compromised without realizing it.

Compliance Impact

This XSS flaw could expose user data, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited. Organizations using this plugin risk non-compliance and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Complianz GDPR/CCPA Cookie Consent Banner plugin to the latest version beyond 7.5.5. Temporarily disable comment functionality if not essential. Review and remove any suspicious comments already approved. Implement additional input sanitization for comment fields.
