Executive Summary

The PowerPress Podcasting plugin before version 11.17.11 has a flaw where it does not properly check redirects when fetching media URLs. This allows users with contributor role or higher to trick the server into making requests to internal services they shouldn't access, known as a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) attack.

Detection Guidance

Check if the PowerPress plugin version is between 11.13.12 and 11.17.9. Look for unusual internal network requests originating from WordPress users with contributor roles or higher. Monitor logs for SSRF attempts targeting internal services.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access internal services on your server, potentially stealing sensitive data, interacting with internal APIs, or launching further attacks against other systems within your network. This could lead to data breaches or unauthorized system access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations could face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the PowerPress plugin to version 11.17.11 or later immediately. Remove or restrict contributor-level user access to media URL fetching functionality until the update is applied.
