Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, the GRANT PROXY statement treats an IDENTIFIED clause with an empty password as though authentication were not specified, causing it to check the wrong grantor privileges. A low-privileged attacker who can name another account can exploit this authorization error to set that account's password. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in MariaDB involves an incorrect privilege check in the GRANT PROXY statement when an empty password is specified. The system treats an empty password as if authentication was not specified, leading to wrong privilege checks. This allows a low-privileged attacker to set passwords for other accounts without proper authorization.

Detection Guidance

Check MariaDB server version with 'mysql --version' or 'SELECT VERSION();'. If running affected versions (10.6.1-10.6.27, 10.11.1-10.11.18, 11.4.1-11.4.12, 11.8.1-11.8.8, 12.3.1-12.3.2, 13.0.1), the system is vulnerable. Review GRANT PROXY statements for empty password clauses in IDENTIFIED clauses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to change passwords of other user accounts, potentially gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data or escalating privileges. This could lead to data breaches, loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MariaDB to patched versions (10.6.28+, 10.11.19+, 11.4.13+, 11.8.9+, 12.3.3+, 13.0.2+). As a temporary workaround, use random and non-guessable usernames to prevent attackers from targeting specific accounts.
