Description

The GiveWP – Donation Plugin and Fundraising Platform plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's `givewp_campaign_grid` shortcode in versions up to, and including, 4.17.0 This is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user supplied shortcode attributes (`filter_by`, `layout`, `sort_by`, `order_by`) in the CampaignGridShortcode::parseAttributes() function combined with the render template emitting `json_encode($attributes)` inside a single-quoted HTML attribute without esc_attr() β€” json_encode() does not escape single quotes by default, so a `'` in an attribute value breaks out of the enclosing attribute. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the GiveWP WordPress plugin up to version 4.17.0. It allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages via the plugin's campaign grid shortcode. The issue stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on shortcode attributes like filter_by, layout, sort_by, and order_by. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for GiveWP plugin versions up to 4.17.0. Look for unauthorized script injections in pages using the givewp_campaign_grid shortcode. Inspect HTML source for unescaped attributes or unusual json_encode output in campaign grid elements.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. For website owners, it risks data breaches, reputational damage, and potential loss of donor trust. Users may experience unauthorized actions or exposure to phishing attempts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR by exposing user data through script injection, violating data protection principles. For HIPAA, it risks unauthorized access to protected health information if donor data is compromised. Both standards require safeguarding user data, and this flaw undermines those protections.

Mitigation Strategies

Update GiveWP plugin to version 4.18.0 or later immediately. Remove Contributor-level and higher user roles if not required. Review pages for injected scripts and remove any unauthorized content. Monitor for unusual activity in donation or campaign management areas.
