Race Condition in Linux Kernel SMB Client

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-98174, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: fix rlist race and missing initialization TCP_Server_Info.rlist is allocated via kzalloc which zeros both ->next and ->prev to NULL instead of pointing to itself, making list_empty() always return false and list_add() dereference a NULL ->prev pointer. Also, cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect() can be called concurrently from multiple cifsd threads, allowing the same server's rlist node to be added twice into the local list, corrupting it.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel affects the SMB client implementation. It involves a race condition in the TCP_Server_Info.rlist structure where improper initialization causes list_empty() to always return false and list_add() to dereference a NULL pointer. Additionally, concurrent calls to cifs_signal_cifsd_for_reconnect() can corrupt the list by adding the same server's rlist node twice.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's SMB client implementation. Detection requires checking kernel logs for SMB-related errors or crashes, particularly involving cifsd or TCP_Server_Info structures. Monitor for kernel oops messages or system hangs during SMB operations. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to system crashes or instability due to corrupted kernel data structures. It may also cause unexpected behavior in SMB client operations, potentially disrupting file sharing or network services relying on the Linux kernel's SMB functionality.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Linux kernel security patches immediately. Disable SMB client functionality if not required. Restrict network access to SMB shares until patched. Monitor vendor advisories for updates specific to your distribution.
