Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (pmbus/core) increase number of phases and add new mask Increase the number of phases to 16 as a new upcoming device supports such a number. While at it, add a new mask for controlling the source of the output voltage. Note (groeck): This patch was meant to prepare for support of MAX20826 and compatible devices, which support more than 10 phases per page. However, Sashiko reports that the mp2975 driver already supports up to 14 phases, and the mp2856 driver supports up to 12 phases. This already has the potential for out-of-bounds writes when probing the affected chips, making this patch a bug fix.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a flaw in the Linux kernel's hwmon subsystem, specifically in the pmbus/core component. The issue arises from insufficient phase limits in the code, which can lead to out-of-bounds writes when probing certain hardware devices like MAX20826, mp2975, and mp2856. These devices support more phases than the current code accounts for, creating a potential security risk.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's hwmon subsystem and pmbus/core driver. Detection requires checking the kernel version and installed drivers for affected components like the mp2975 or mp2856 chips. Use commands like 'uname -a' to check kernel version and 'lsmod | grep pmbus' to verify if the pmbus module is loaded.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service by triggering out-of-bounds memory writes. It primarily affects systems using the affected Linux kernel versions with compatible hardware devices, potentially leading to system instability or unauthorized access.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest stable version that includes the fix for this vulnerability. If using affected drivers like mp2975 or mp2856, ensure they are updated or patched. Monitor vendor advisories for kernel updates and apply them promptly.
