Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: qcom: iris: fix runtime PM reference leaks Use pm_runtime_resume_and_get() in iris_enable_power_domains() to avoid leaking a runtime PM usage count on failure. Also ensure pm_runtime_put_sync() is always called in iris_disable_power_domains(), even when iris_opp_set_rate() fails, so runtime PM references remain balanced.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves runtime power management (PM) reference leaks in the Qualcomm Iris media driver. The issue occurs when the function iris_enable_power_domains() fails to properly handle runtime PM usage counts, leading to leaks. Additionally, iris_disable_power_domains() may not always call pm_runtime_put_sync(), causing imbalanced runtime PM references.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's media subsystem, particularly the Qualcomm Iris driver. Detection requires checking kernel logs for runtime PM reference leaks in the iris driver. Use commands like dmesg | grep -i 'iris' or journalctl -k | grep -i 'runtime PM leak' to identify issues.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to system instability or unexpected behavior due to improper power management in the Linux kernel. It may cause resource exhaustion or crashes in systems using the affected Qualcomm Iris media driver, potentially disrupting media processing tasks.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update that includes the fix for CVE-2026-98437. Recompile or update the kernel with the patch for the Qualcomm Iris driver to ensure runtime PM references are properly managed.
