Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel occurs when closing an SMB server connection. An asynchronous request may still be pending when the connection is closed, preventing the connection from fully closing. The fix involves canceling active async requests before waiting for them to finish.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves async SMB requests not being canceled when a connection closes. Detection requires checking kernel logs for stalled SMB connections or hung async requests. Use dmesg or journalctl to inspect kernel logs for SMB-related errors or timeouts. Look for messages about async requests or connection hangs.

Impact Analysis

This could lead to resource leaks or stalled connections in systems using SMB server functionality. It may cause performance issues or unexpected behavior when managing SMB connections, potentially disrupting file sharing services.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest patched version to resolve the smb/server async request issue. Monitor connection closures to ensure async requests are properly canceled.
