Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: Fix runtime PM leak in amdgpu_debugfs_test_ib_show() amdgpu_debugfs_test_ib_show() resumes the device with pm_runtime_get_sync() before taking the reset domain semaphore with down_write_killable(). If the write lock acquisition is interrupted, the function returns without calling pm_runtime_put_autosuspend(), leaking the runtime PM reference acquired for the device and keeping the GPU awake. Drop the runtime PM reference on the interrupted down_write_killable() error path before returning. (cherry picked from commit ec30a576c2d4c0364549e6c04218f50704ef56c8)

Executive Summary

This is a Linux kernel vulnerability in the AMD GPU driver. It involves a runtime power management (PM) leak in the amdgpu_debugfs_test_ib_show() function. The function resumes the GPU device but fails to release the runtime PM reference if interrupted while acquiring a write lock, causing the GPU to remain awake unnecessarily.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's AMD GPU driver and does not have network-based detection methods. To check if your system is affected, verify the kernel version and AMD GPU driver version. Use commands like 'uname -a' to check the kernel version and 'modinfo amdgpu' to inspect the AMD GPU driver module.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to increased power consumption and reduced battery life on systems with AMD GPUs. It may also cause unexpected system behavior or crashes if the leaked PM reference causes resource conflicts.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update or patch that includes the fix for this vulnerability. If you are using a distribution with a supported kernel, update via your package manager (e.g., 'apt upgrade', 'yum update', or 'dnf upgrade'). Reboot the system after applying the update to ensure the patched kernel is active.
