Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gpio: cdev: fix kernel stack leak to user-space in error path If we fail to acquire the GPIO chip guard in gpio_desc_to_lineinfo(), we return immediately before zeroing the info struct we'll end up passing to the user-space later in lineinfo_get_v1(). This may leak the kernel stack contents. Make gpio_desc_to_lineinfo() return int so that the -ENODEV returned on failure to acquire the guard can be propagated to the callers. While not strictly necessary: move the memset() before trying to acquire the SRCU read lock too for good measure.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a kernel stack leak in the Linux kernel's GPIO character device (cdev) subsystem. When failing to acquire a GPIO chip guard, the function gpio_desc_to_lineinfo() returns early without zeroing a struct that will later be passed to user-space. This may expose kernel stack contents to user-space, potentially leaking sensitive information.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's GPIO character device subsystem and does not have a direct network detection method. Detection requires checking the kernel version and examining the GPIO subsystem code for the described flaw. Use commands like 'uname -a' to check kernel version and 'dmesg | grep gpio' to inspect GPIO-related errors.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to read kernel stack memory, which might contain sensitive data like passwords, encryption keys, or other confidential information. It primarily affects systems using GPIO functionality in the Linux kernel.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel patch or update to a version where this vulnerability is fixed. If immediate patching is not possible, restrict access to GPIO devices via kernel module blacklisting or system policies until the update is applied.
