Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfc: nfcmrvl: validate helper command length before pull The firmware download receive path removes the NCI data header and reads the helper command before validating the remaining packet length. A short frame can therefore reach the data access before the malformed packet is rejected. Validate the complete helper command length before stripping the NCI data header.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves the NFC subsystem's nfcmrvl driver. The issue occurs during firmware download when the receive path removes the NCI data header and reads the helper command before checking the remaining packet length. A malformed short frame could reach data access before being rejected, potentially causing unexpected behavior.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects the Linux kernel's NFC subsystem, specifically the nfcmrvl driver. Detection requires checking kernel logs for malformed NFC packets or failed firmware downloads. Monitor logs with 'dmesg | grep nfcmrvl' or 'journalctl -k | grep nfcmrvl'. If your system uses NFC with this driver, inspect network traffic for short or malformed NFC frames.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause a denial of service or potentially execute arbitrary code on affected systems. Systems using NFC with the nfcmrvl driver may be vulnerable to crashes or unauthorized access if the flaw is triggered.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to the latest stable version where this vulnerability is patched. If immediate patching is not possible, disable the nfcmrvl driver by blacklisting it with 'echo blacklist nfcmrvl >> /etc/modprobe.d/disable-nfc.conf' and reboot. Ensure NFC functionality is not critical before disabling.
