Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: fix object leaks in virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl() virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl() calls drm_gem_object_release() on both the virtio_gpu_resource_assign_uuid() and drm_gem_handle_create() error paths instead of dropping the reference it owns, so obj->funcs->free() never runs and the virtio_gpu_object, the resource id and the host-side resource are leaked. Use drm_gem_object_put() instead.

Executive Summary

This is a memory leak vulnerability in the Linux kernel's VirtIO GPU driver. When creating a GPU resource, the function virtio_gpu_resource_create_blob_ioctl() incorrectly releases a reference to a GPU object twice on error paths instead of properly cleaning up. This prevents the object's cleanup function from running, causing memory leaks of the GPU object, resource ID, and host-side resources.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's drm/virtio driver and requires kernel-level inspection. Detection involves checking for unpatched kernel versions or analyzing kernel memory for leaked objects. Use commands like 'uname -a' to check kernel version and 'dmesg | grep virtio' to look for related errors.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to gradual memory exhaustion on systems using VirtIO GPU, potentially causing system instability, crashes, or performance degradation over time. It may also allow local attackers to cause denial-of-service conditions by triggering resource leaks.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update that includes the fix for CVE-2026-98607. If immediate patching is not possible, consider disabling the virtio GPU driver if not in use or restricting access to vulnerable systems.
