Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: SEV: Do cache maintenance on the source VM *before* clearing SEV state Explicitly flush caches after intra-host migration before clearing "SEV active" on the source VM, as doing cache maintenance afterwards creates a tiny window where memory reclaim could return memory to the host without performing a cache flush, e.g. as pointed out by Sashiko: CPU1 in sev_migrate_from(): src->active = false; CPU2 running concurrent unmap: Since active is false, the automatic cache flush in sev_guest_memory_reclaimed is skipped. The host frees and reallocates the page. CPU1 in sev_migrate_from(): sev_writeback_caches(src_kvm); Executes a hardware cache flush (wbnoinvd), which writes the guest's old dirty ciphertext over the new page owner's data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves improper cache management during SEV (Secure Encrypted Virtualization) migration. When a virtual machine is migrated between hosts, the source VM's SEV state is cleared before cache maintenance is performed. This creates a small window where memory could be reclaimed without flushing caches, potentially exposing sensitive data.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's KVM SEV (Secure Encrypted Virtualization) implementation. Detection requires checking kernel logs for SEV-related errors or unusual cache flush behavior during VM migration. Monitor for warnings about SEV state clearing or cache maintenance failures in dmesg or system logs. No direct commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive data from a virtual machine's memory after migration. This could lead to information disclosure, unauthorized access to encrypted data, or privilege escalation in cloud environments using SEV.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Linux kernel patches that address this issue. Ensure SEV-enabled VMs are not migrated between hosts without proper cache flushing. Review and update KVM SEV configuration to enforce cache maintenance before clearing SEV state. Monitor for any SEV-related errors post-update.
