Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mtd: rawnand: cadence: Initialize IRQ state before requesting IRQ The Cadence NAND interrupt handler uses both the IRQ lock and completion object. Registering the IRQ before initializing them leaves a window in which a pending interrupt can access uninitialized synchronization state. Initialize them before registering the handler.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Linux kernel involves the Cadence NAND interrupt handler. It occurs because the IRQ lock and completion object are used before being initialized. Registering the IRQ before initializing these synchronization mechanisms creates a window where a pending interrupt could access uninitialized state, potentially causing system instability or crashes.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's mtd rawnand Cadence driver. Detection requires checking kernel logs for NAND-related errors or verifying if the affected driver is loaded. Commands like dmesg | grep -i nand or lsmod | grep -i cadence may help identify issues.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could lead to system crashes or instability if a pending interrupt occurs before the IRQ handler is properly initialized. It primarily affects systems using the Cadence NAND controller in the Linux kernel, potentially causing data corruption or denial of service in affected devices.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Linux kernel to a patched version where this issue is resolved. If immediate patching is not possible, avoid using the Cadence NAND driver until an update is applied.
