Description

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: check dc_state_create_copy() for NULL in dm_suspend dc_state_create_copy() can return NULL on allocation failure. dm_suspend() only conditionally skips dm_gpureset_toggle_interrupts() and continues execution, returning success. dm_resume() then dereferences the NULL cached_dc_state in link_enc_cfg_copy() and the following dc_state->stream_count loop, crashing during GPU reset recovery. Return -ENOMEM immediately if the copy fails, so the caller aborts suspend instead of leaving a NULL cached state for resume. (cherry picked from commit 84b6d7932fdd2857795a257f9f258562a3cddcab)

Executive Summary

This is a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability in the Linux kernel's AMD display driver. It occurs when dc_state_create_copy() fails to allocate memory and returns NULL. The dm_suspend() function does not properly handle this NULL return, leading to a crash during GPU reset recovery when dm_resume() tries to access the NULL cached_dc_state.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Linux kernel's AMD display driver (drm/amd/display). Detection requires checking kernel logs for GPU-related crashes during suspend/resume operations or GPU reset recovery. Monitor system logs for NULL pointer dereference errors in AMD display components.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system crashes during GPU operations, particularly when suspending or resuming the display. Users may experience unexpected system freezes or reboots when using AMD GPUs with affected Linux kernel versions.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest kernel update that includes the fix for this issue. If immediate patching is not possible, avoid using suspend/resume functionality on systems with AMD GPUs until the update is applied. Monitor vendor advisories for kernel updates addressing this specific issue.
