Privilege Escalation in Zammad via Local User

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-102490, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Zammad packages built with packager.io (DEB and RPM) could have allowed a local attacker who already had file system write privileges as the unprivileged zammad service account to escalate to full root privileges on the host. Service processes began running as root and executed files that were owned and writable by the zammad account before dropping their identity to that account. An attacker holding that foothold could have escalated within seconds, because the affected services were restarted automatically whenever they stopped; no administrator interaction was required. Only installations from the DEB and RPM packages were affected β€” installations from source or the official container images were not. All released packaged versions were affected.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows the local zammad user to escalate privileges to root in all versions of Zammad, including the latest alpha release. This means an attacker with local access could gain full control over the system.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if the Zammad service is running with excessive privileges. Verify if the local zammad user has sudo or root access by running: sudo -l -U zammad and id zammad. Also inspect system logs for unusual privilege escalation attempts.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized users with local access to take complete control of the system, leading to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements for GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate strict access controls and data protection measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict local user access to the zammad system and audit all privilege escalation attempts. Update Zammad to the latest patched version as soon as it becomes available. Monitor system logs for unauthorized privilege changes.
