Description

In the IPv4 PASV path, the FTP Client accepts whatever address was sent in the server's `227` reply. Validation only covers the parse and the non-zero values, thus a malicious server can name any address and direct the Client there.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves an FTP client accepting any address sent in a server's 227 reply during an IPv4 PASV command. The client only validates the parse and non-zero values, allowing a malicious server to redirect the client to any address.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves FTP clients accepting arbitrary addresses in PASV replies without proper validation. To detect it, monitor FTP traffic for unexpected server responses containing IP addresses in 227 replies. Use packet capture tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect FTP control channel traffic for malformed or suspicious PASV responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to trick users into connecting to a malicious server instead of the intended one. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized access, or further attacks like man-in-the-middle.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face penalties for failing to protect data transfers.

Mitigation Strategies

Update your FTP client to a patched version that validates the server's address in the 227 reply. Avoid using FTP clients that do not perform strict validation of the PASV response.
