CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in Google Chrome's Bluetooth component. It occurs when a program tries to use memory that has already been freed, potentially allowing a remote attacker who compromised the renderer process to execute arbitrary code outside the sandbox via a crafted HTML page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 154.0.8037.57. Detection involves checking the installed Chrome version. On Linux or macOS, run: google-chrome --version. On Windows, check via Control Panel or run: wmic product where name='Google Chrome' get version. If the version is below 154.0.8037.57, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to run malicious code on your device, bypassing security restrictions. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, installation of malware, or complete control over your system if you visit a specially crafted webpage.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially lead to unauthorized code execution outside the sandbox, which may result in data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive information. Such incidents could violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy), depending on the data involved.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 154.0.8037.57 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in Bluetooth.
