CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in WindowDialog in Google Chrome versions prior to 154.0.8037.57. A use-after-free occurs when a program continues to use a pointer after freeing the memory it points to, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. In this case, a remote attacker could exploit this by tricking a user into visiting a crafted HTML page, allowing them to execute arbitrary code outside the browser's sandbox.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Google Chrome versions prior to 154.0.8037.57. To detect it, check your Chrome version by running chrome://version/ in the browser. If your version is below 154.0.8037.57, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you visit a specially crafted webpage, the attacker could gain control over your computer, steal sensitive data, or install malware. The attack requires user interaction, such as clicking a link or visiting a malicious site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially lead to unauthorized code execution, which may result in data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive information. Such incidents could violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations by exposing personal or health data without authorization.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Google Chrome to version 154.0.8037.57 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in WindowDialog.
