Description

The Contact Form by Supsystic WordPress plugin before 1.8.0 does not sanitise and escape a form name, allowing users with access to the form editor to inject arbitrary web scripts that execute when another user views the form. On multisite installations, where administrators do not hold the unfiltered_html capability, this crosses a privilege boundary.

Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Contact Form by Supsystic WordPress plugin versions before 1.8.0. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize or escape the form name input, allowing users with form editor access to inject malicious scripts. When other users view the form, the injected script executes.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Contact Form by Supsystic plugin version is below 1.8.0. Inspect form names in the plugin editor for unusual or malicious scripts. Review server logs for unexpected script executions when forms are viewed.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with form editor access could inject scripts to steal user data, perform actions on their behalf, or redirect them to malicious sites. On multisite WordPress installations without unfiltered_html capability, lower-privileged users could escalate privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Contact Form by Supsystic plugin to version 1.8.0 or later immediately. Remove any untrusted user access to the form editor until the update is applied. Monitor for unusual activity in form submissions or script executions.
