Executive Summary

Kaneo before version 2.1.6 has a missing authorization vulnerability. Authenticated users can access other workspaces by providing identifiers like project, task, label, or workspace IDs to API routes that lack membership checks. This allows reading projects and tasks, modifying or deleting tasks, labels, and comments, and searching workspace contents.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Kaneo instance is running a version before 2.1.6. Verify the version via API endpoints or system logs. Test API routes by attempting to access workspace resources using identifiers from shared links without proper membership. Monitor for unauthorized access attempts or data leaks in logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with access to shared project links or identifiers could read sensitive data, modify or delete tasks and comments, and search workspace contents without proper authorization. This could lead to data leaks, unauthorized changes, or disruption of workflows.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's access controls. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance with privacy regulations, and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Kaneo to version 2.1.6 or later. Ensure all API endpoints enforce workspace membership checks. Review and restrict access to shared project links. Monitor for suspicious activity and unauthorized data access.
