Executive Summary

The PeproDev Branches Map WordPress plugin (versions up to 3.0.1) has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. This occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize user input and escape output in shortcode attributes, widget settings, and popup templates. Attackers with Contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when other users view those pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin versions for PeproDev Branches Map (Mapify) using commands like 'wp plugin list' in WP-CLI or inspecting the plugin directory for version details. Look for versions prior to 3.0.1. Review server logs for unusual script injections in pages or posts, particularly those with Contributor-level access.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts could steal user cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. They might also redirect users to phishing sites, deface your website, or perform actions on behalf of users without their consent.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing user data through script injection. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to unauthorized data access or disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the PeproDev Branches Map plugin to version 3.0.1 or later immediately. Remove or restrict Contributor-level access temporarily if not required. Scan all WordPress pages and posts for injected scripts, especially those modified by Contributors. Review SVG map files for external links or unsafe scripts.
